01

The short version

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate with a factory UV layer on top. Sun breaks that layer down and the plastic underneath oxidizes to a yellow haze.

Polishing alone makes it look good for six weeks. We wet sand through the failed layer with four grits, polish to clarity, then spray a two-part automotive UV clear coat over the lens.

It is the cheapest thing you can do to make a ten-year-old car look cared for, and it measurably improves night-time light output.

What is included

  • Masking of surrounding paint and trim
  • Wet sanding through four grit stages
  • Machine polish to optical clarity
  • Two-part sprayed UV clear coat
  • Forced cure before handover
  • Fog lights included where fitted
  • Tail light haze treatment on request
  • Two-year sample warranty on the clear coat
  • Light output check before and after
  • Photos of both lenses before and after

02

How we run it

  1. 01

    Mask

Paint, trim and the light gaskets get taped so nothing sees sandpaper or overspray.

  2. 02

    Sand

Four grits, wet, working from the coarse cut that removes the failed UV layer to a fine finish.

  3. 03

    Polish

Machine polished to optical clarity, checked against a light source.

  4. 04

    Coat

Two-part automotive clear coat, sprayed, which is what makes the result last.

  5. 05

    Cure

Forced cure in the bay so you can drive away the same afternoon.

03

Why it is worth doing properly

Three things customers notice within a week.

01

Better night vision

A clear lens throws a defined beam. A hazed one scatters the light into the ditch.

02

Passes inspection

Severely clouded lenses can fail a safety check in some states.

03

Same afternoon

Drop it off after lunch, pick it up before dinner.

What moves the price

  • How deeply the lens has oxidized, and whether it is crazed internally
  • Whether the lenses have an aftermarket coating that has to come off first
  • Access, since some models need the bumper loosened
  • Adding fog lights or tail light treatment

Questions about headlight restoration

More in the full question list

The sanding part is similar. The difference is the sprayed two-part clear coat, which is why ours lasts years and a wipe-on kit lasts weeks.

If the crazing is inside the plastic rather than on the surface, no. We check before you commit.

Yes, usually as a light polish. Tail lenses rarely need the full sanding process.
