A carriage house, two buckets and forty-six years of not changing much
Henri Deveaux started washing cars by hand off Upper King in 1979. His son Marcus runs the same method in four bays on Huger Street, with better chemistry and the same refusal to buy a brush.

Why we never bought the machine
In 1991 a salesman came by with a brochure for a soft-cloth tunnel. Henri walked him out to the lot, pointed at a black Cadillac that had just come from one across town, and asked him to look at the roof in the sunlight. The salesman left.
That is the whole philosophy, really. A tunnel cannot see. It runs the same cloth over a farm truck and a concours car, carrying whatever the last vehicle brought with it. A person can see what they are touching, and can stop.
We are slower and we cost more. A car takes an hour instead of four minutes, and we run four bays rather than forty. What you get for that is a finish that still looks right at year eight, and a shop that will tell you when you do not need what you came in asking for.

Measure before you cut
Paint depth readings before any polish, recorded and given to you in writing. We do not guess with clear coat.
Say no when no is the answer
If a scratch needs paint or a coating is more than your car needs, we will tell you before you pay, not after.

Six moments on Huger Street
1979
A carriage house off Upper King
Henri Deveaux starts washing cars by hand in a rented carriage house with two buckets, a garden hose and a hand-lettered sign. Six cars a day, cash only, closed Sundays.
1988
The Huger Street bays
The business moves into a four-bay building on Huger Street with a proper drain and covered space, which for the first time makes detailing possible in August.
1996
Classic car work begins
A Charleston collector asks whether we would look at a 1963 Corvette with faded single-stage paint. That car brought eleven more, and collector work has been part of the shop ever since.
2009
Second generation takes over
Marcus Deveaux buys the business from his father. The hand wash method stays exactly as it is. Paint correction equipment and a proper light bar arrive the same year.
2017
Coating and film bay
A dust-controlled bay is added for ceramic coating and paint protection film, so protection work no longer has to share space with the wash line.
2023
The mobile van
A self-contained van with filtered water and waste capture puts us in driveways from the Old Village to Sullivan's Island, and on fleet routes across the county.

01Paint correction and classics
Marcus Deveaux

Marcus grew up sweeping the bay floor while his mother ran the books. He took over in 2009, kept the hand wash exactly as it was, and added the correction and coating side of the business. He is the one who will tell you when a scratch needs paint instead of polish.

Ruth Ann runs the board, which means she decides which four cars get bays each day and why yours is or is not one of them. She also runs the interior team and has an unreasonable talent for getting stains out of light-colored cloth.

Elijah came from a wrap shop in Columbia and cuts every film pattern himself. He is particular about edges to a degree that occasionally slows the schedule down, which is exactly why we hired him.

Sofia Marchetti

Sofia runs the van and the fleet accounts. If you are on Daniel Island on a Wednesday or Sullivan's on a Friday, she is the one in your driveway at 7 am with her own water.
